(Commuting under Covid.. and afterwards)

Lee: I’m a porter at the Northern General, and when I’ve had a busy day, seeing things you don’t want to see, it’s enjoyable to cycle back home. It gives you time to think.

I borrowed an e-bike on the CycleBoost scheme, which has been brilliant. I used to get the bus in the past, but when the virus started the buses weren’t turning up sometimes and then the next one was jam packed and social distancing was impossible. I’m keeping away from buses now.

I’m dealing with people with Covid 19, you’re seeing what we call the ‘blue beds’ when people have passed away. When I cycle back it’s a decent journey and takes about 25 minutes, I pass gardens and I’ve been seeing the spring coming. It gives you some ‘me time’.

I’m seeing a lot of people on bikes now, a lot of families, and I think it’s the safety aspect more than anything that stops people normally, although I’ve had no problems.

I’ll be buying an e-bike through the salary sacrifice scheme if it’s happening after all this, and I’d encourage other people to have a go at it too.

A few people have said an e-bike is cheating but it’s not, you still have to put some work in. I know people who cycle to work on a normal bike, but you have to have a shower at work. An e-bike is less hassle.
